How Many Steps a Day Should I Aim For? Striding Towards Success

As we step into the new year, it's not just a new year. For many, it signifies a fresh start and an opportunity to hit the reset button. In the eyes of many, this is the perfect moment for a new beginning. As we embrace this fresh start, one of the most common questions our 'Boob Boss' Katie, a seasoned Personal Trainer with over 20 years of fitness industry expertise, gets asked is, ‘How do I achieve my daily step goal while chained to my desk?’ Well, you have come to the right place. We are going to take a look into how this can be achieved, why steps are important and how many steps you should be aiming for.

In a world that's perpetually on the move, achieving your daily step target isn't merely a fitness goal; it's a journey toward a healthier and more active lifestyle. If you've ever pondered, "How many steps a day should I aim for?" rest assured, you're not alone. So, let's lace up those trainers and embark on the path to realising your step goals, optimising health and enhancing fitness for the vibrant year ahead.

How Many Steps Should I Aim For? Understanding the Magic Number

In the quest for a healthier lifestyle, setting a step goal is key. The magic number often recommended by health experts is 10,000 steps per day. This target is known to provide a solid foundation for improved cardiovascular health, weight management and overall health and well-being. However, it's essential to consider individual factors such as age, fitness level and health conditions when determining your personal step goal. (Always consult with your doctor or health professional before starting any new exercise).

Building Your Step Routine - Start Small, Finish Strong

For those just beginning their journey to hit their daily step target, the key is to start small and gradually increase. Begin with a goal that feels achievable to you, such as 6,000 steps a day and progressively raise the bar as your fitness improves. This approach ensures a sustainable and enjoyable journey towards a more active lifestyle. Remember, as much as we want this to improve your fitness and overall health, we also want this to become a habitual habit. Doing something you don’t enjoy or find too challenging from the off, won’t last and you could be back in the same position this time next year!

How Can I Hit My Daily Step Count?

Wondering how to seamlessly integrate more steps into your day? With more and more people working in an office environment and sat at a desk all day, mix that with longer working hours, hitting daily step count is becoming more of a challenge. But it CAN be done, and following a few handy hacks and practical tips we have put together below, will incorporate more movement into your daily routine, making your step goal a natural part of your lifestyle. Not only hitting, but helping you to be well on your way to smash your steps goal!

  1. Try and go for a morning walk. Whether this be going for a walk before you start work, walking the kids to school instead of driving (then you get the extra steps from the walk back) or even a quick 10 minute brisk walk before jumping in the car to drive to work. This will not only help get a chunk of steps for the day, but starting the day with some fresh air will help you feel energised and ready for the day ahead.
  2. Park the car the furthest parking space away.
  3. Take the lift instead of the stairs. If you need to walk up and down the stairs a few times a day, this will all add up.
  4. Fancy a brew? Get up and make a drink or stand up and have a little walk around the office to get away from the computer screen and stretch your legs.
  5. Get some steps in on your lunch break. Get outside the office for some fresh air and a little brisk walk to get the heart pumping. This will also help alleviate the after lunch slump.
  6. Walk and talk! If you have work calls scheduled that don’t require you to have your camera on, walk around the house while talking (if working from home). If you’ve arranged a meeting with a colleague in the office, why not both pop your coats on and head out for a ‘walking meeting’.
  7. Online help. During the winter months the last thing you want to do after a long day at work is go for a walk in the dark, cold and rain. Fear not! There are endless videos that can help you get your steps in. Here is one of our favourites  - 4000 Steps Follow Along Workout With Katie Bulmer-Cooke.

Do I Need To Wear A Sports Bra For Walking?

Embarking on a walking routine is a fantastic way to accrue daily steps and boost overall well being. However, the importance of wearing a sports bra during these low-impact activities cannot be overstated. Contrary to common perception, even for those with smaller boobs, activities as seemingly gentle as walking can induce significant breast movement, leading to discomfort and potential long-term damage without adequate support.

That's where NORKS Sports Bras come into play, offering a range of options, including The Bralette, specifically designed for low-impact activities like walking, yoga and pilates. The Bralette Sports Bra ensures not only comfort and style, but also the essential stability needed to reduce strain on breast tissue. Whether you're strolling along the beach or power-walking on a treadmill, investing in a supportive sports bra is not just about comfort but is crucial for maintaining breast health and ensuring a pain-free, enjoyable walking experience. So, ladies, let's step out confidently, knowing that the right sports bra, like The Bralette from NORKS, is a non-negotiable companion on your journey to fitness and well-being.
